Trip 1, Day 1: The Badlands

The Badlands National Park was amazing and we highly recommend approaching it from Rapid City to get the full astounding visual effect. The hour-long drive from Rapid City was mainly prairie and low hills. Once we entered the park, the vista opened up unexpectedly to a totally astonishing and magnificent sight of multi-hued canyons, buttes, and rock formations. None of the pictures do justice to the vastness or deepness of the canyons or how beautiful it is. Roberts Prairie Dog Town was amusing, with dozens of prairie dogs concentrated on this one area of the prairie. We also saw bison and big horn sheep, including a ewe and her lamb right next to the road. The drive through the park was well worthwhile and took several hours, including many stops at overlooks and a few short hikes along the way. Our pub for our first evening in Rapid City was Firehouse Brewing Company. Great beers, tasty food, and interesting decor, as the pub/restaurant actually was an old firehouse!

Replying to

Mine was the Fire Jumper Stout; Mike's was the Swarthy Beaver Pale Ale. No IPAs on tap that evening because they had run out the day before due to high demand!
